Playa Negra: a coconut palm leaning over black sand and turquoise waves

~2 min on foot · 142 steps from the gate

Playa Negra

The house’s own beach: out the front gate, turn right, and there it is — about 10 km of soft black sand.

Playa Negra, from the house’s beach guide

“Only 142 steps from my front gate! Oh yes, I counted!”

Quiet on weekdays, livelier when day-trippers arrive on weekends. There are shade trees, the black sand gets hot by midday, and you can walk right along the beach into town in about five minutes. Walk the other way to Banana Azul for a coco loco or a piña colada.

It’s more of a swimming beach than a surfing beach, though it gets surfable waves on some days in winter.
